My son came home on leave for the first time since going in the Army over a year and a half ago and wanted to go camping/fishing. So we took our 3rd trip of the year and headed down to North Bend Park on Lake Kerr in southern VA last Thursday (about 2 hours from me). It was my first time to the park so didn't really know what to expect. At only $24/night I have to say it was a fantastic deal. The sites are probably the largest I have ever been on, all had a built in raised table for grills to go along with the picnic table, fire rings and most had direct access to the lake (which was a nice clear 76 degrees and great for the kids to swim/fish in). I took some pictures with my phone but forgot to take it out of my pocket when launching my fishing kayak and in the drink it went!! Good thing it's a company phone, so once my new one shows up I'll try to pull the pics off of the memory card.

Unfortunately I also had one other issue that makes a funny story but could have turned out much worse. My son and I were sitting around the remnants of our fire about midnight roasting a few hot dogs for late night snacks. I decided to grab a water out of the cooler and when I stood up I stepped on a can of Off bug spray that he put down beside his chair. A rock punctured the can and since it was under pressure a jet of fluid came flying out and all over my leg. Within a split second the jet hit the fire and it was like the movie Backdraft!! The can is spinning around with fire shooting out of it and hits my leg which lights up like the 4th of July with all of the bug spray liquid on it. Luckily, while the campsite was gravel, it was surrounded by lots of sand and I dove for the sand head first and smothered it pretty quick. No damage done other than it looks like I put Nair on half of my left leg, lol.

I hear it is a great place to camp. A few friends of mine were down there also last weekend.  They would have had a flag that said VACAMPERS on it.  Two wonderful older ladies who camp as often as they can. Glad to hear you had a great time with your son. Tell him THANKS for all of us for defending this country. I t is a hard life but has great rewards.

A day in the outdoors camping is better than any indoors activity.
