We bought a 2" memory foam for about $75 (Full) early this year and it has made a big difference.  Much nicer nights sleep

I use three thermarest self inflating camp pads.  Two 25x77x3" and one 72x70.  Works like a charm, comfy and adjustable to desired firmness.
Ditto, it's the best solution but also the most expensive one. Sounds like it wouldn't work for you.

Ditto the ditto!  I have reflectix permanently placed between the wood bunk end and the standard mattress.  And then I use my thermarest between the mattress and reflectix.  Provides a nice enhancement, variable firmness, and easily removed.

Boy!!!! This is an old thread but I'll add my 2 cents anyway....

We removed our foam mattress completely. We use an "Air-bed" mattress (with built in pump) and a 3" memory foam topper. It's the most comfy bed I've ever slept on. We make the bed, deflate the mattress and the roof closes just fine.

We put 1/2" thick closed cell foam exercise mats on the bed platform, for insulation (about $2 each at Walmart).

we actually take one matress and put it on the other, and use the empty bunk end as a "closet". works for us since there is only 2 of us camping.   Wink

Just don't have any arguments that would result in you sleeping in the closet  ;)

We tried 2 self-inflating camp mats, but it didn't work for us. Switched to memory foam.
I still have the mats, I'd be happy to sell them if someone is interested and willing to pay shipping. Message me!

Have 9 nights in on the new system:  9" queen Coleman twin chamber air mattress,  with 2" memory foam on top.  The air mattress is adjustable with a remote control to add or reduce air from either left or right chamber  (Reflectix was left on the bottom, remnant from the mattress system used previously to reduce condensation).

Results are in!  0 condensation, 0 back aches.  Never going back to the old crappy mattress.  It is in the basement, looking for permanent storage that mice will not discover.
