My wife expressed interest in doing some geocaching recently, so I bought her a GPS unit.  After a few local searches, she was planning on doing some at Tahquamenon State Park in Michigans upper peninsula.  While she did do the search online for the locations before we left, she discovered that she had forgotten to transfer them to the GPS unit.  Unfortunately the state park is almost 400 miles and over six hours from home!!  She was greatly disappointed, although we still had a fantastic time there, even though we even had some tv problems.  She is looking forward to doing some searches on our upcoming next trip.  BTW....there have to be hundreds of potentially suitable geocache locations in that state park!

I do geocaches everywhere I go. You are right it gets you out and about and you discover lots of interesting things and places you didn't know about, even close to home.

Sorry! I honestly forgot about that forum. Mods, please feel free to move  the thread.

I have been trying to turn more people onto it because my boys are having a ball with it and it is great exercise (some of the harder ones)....i swear I think I lost 5lbs yesturday, we did our first hard terrain one...it was a doozy. Lol. But even the easy ones are great!

I just picked a campground this week due to the fact that there are a ton of caches in the area. We love geocaching!

Yes!  Been at it since the Garmin Rino130 was introduced.  Recently, I picked up an Apisphere Geomate.Jr when they were on clearance at Target for $15.00.  It's fun when the kids want to go "treasure hunting", while we are camping!

We like both geocaching and letterboxing but letterboxing is a guaranteed "reward" for kids. Kids want the reward of "what's in the box" but many geocaches turn pretty junky over time as a natural consequence of human behavior (take something good, swap in something not so good). With letterboxing they always get the reward of the stamp and you can have fun helping them make or pick out their own personal stamp. And after a few years, you still have their logbook of stamps to look back on, whereas all the McD toys they got from geocaches are long gone.

Lastly, geocaching can involve one person looking at a little screen while everyone else walks along. Because letterboxing is clues based, kids love reading the clues aloud and everyone gets to take an active role in figuring out the adventure and finding the landmarks required to navigate.

Absolutely!  In fact we are off next weekend to camp in Searsport in ME so we can attend a couple of Event Caches.

I haven't gone camping since fall 2005 without geocaching and logging benchmarks.

I also use the GPSR (Garmin 60CSx) for tracking and recording records of hikes in our camping journal, finding local points of interest, with a bicycle handlebar mount to track rides, and to mark great fishing spots when on the boat.
