One of my many sole reasons for going camping is being able to play a little guitar in the great outdoors. Actually, it's a regular sized guitar, and I play it every chance I get while camping, which usually means only on Saturday evening, for a typical weekend tripper. I'll generally start with a collection of american standard folk and blues tunes, (most out of book), then as the evening wears on, and the little ones are dreamin' under their blankets, I like to darken the mood, and break out some of my sad and spooky songs... murder ballads and stuff like that. I also pack a ukulele, a set of harmonicas, a few simple hand percussion items like shakers and spoons, and I try to encourage others to join in, which for the most part, I have no luck.
Some other favorite camping hobbies, (in no particular order):
- Cooking camp food, i.e. cobbler, smores, bb-q, etc...
- Playing Cards, (Rummy 500), or Dominoes
- Fishing
- Inexpensive beer consumption
Alby, I can only disagree with you on one point. So let me just say, life is too short to drink cheap beer.

Gotta vote yes on the music - depending. Summer before last we were at our fav CG and there was a bluegrass festival in the small nearby town. 4 or 5 campers came in and set up down at the far end....we were the only other ones in that area. Saturday afternoon we heard them playing and took Sam for a walk. We stopped and listened, they invited us over, Sam worked his charm on the ladies and we had a great time. One of the men had played back-up for some top country artists and had written a book on his life and times that he shared with DH. We were actually hoping for a free, signed copy but that didn't happen. Darn!
Rap....don't think so. Something with a drum set....would rather not. Guitar or instruments that don't jangle our nerves are perfectly fine. Would lots rather have that than a radio cranked up. We are crazy about CCR, but would rather they not camp next to us.

I too like to travel with my Larrivee OM-03MT. It is a pretty quiet guitar, and I have yet to receive any complaints.
Some campgrounds seem to actually cater to musicians. One in the area hosts an annual blues jam. I may have to check that out.

Most of my camping is going to Bluegrass festivals.. of course this is a totally musical weekend and if you dont like music you better not go.
We usually play (jam) during the day or nite either while a concert is on (away from the stage) and these can go on for just a few minutes to a few hours. often at nite a jam will go on way into the early morning and it bothers no one normally as most folks are either accustomed to it or are involved in a jam themselves..
Its a fun weekend in which you eat well, a few drinks and lots and lots of free music and fun. and most of all very little sleep..

This is funny debate. A single guitar playing campfire music is one of the iconic personas of camping and one that our expectations of the American camping experience was predicated on. If one is opposed to this, stay the hell home for God's sake! After quiet time, then by all means pontificate your distain for simple pleasures but keep your yappy little dog quiet. Oh, Sorry, that wasn't fair and certainly steroid typed a generalized populace.
I for one encourage this type of activity while camping because most ( people) are not subjected to this type of experience in day to day dealings. It offers perspective and diversity that ordinarily would not be sought. I recently found myself a commandeered participant of a barbershop choir group when camping at my favorite CG. And, although I would have never have sought such a forum for myself, the group talked me into participatng that night and I was good and had lots of fun. So, pack plenty of objectivity when leaving the confines of your narrow domicile while camping. It could be the most positive experience of your life.
Sorry if I offended anyone who is not open to such a thing. But, one can not expect absolute solitude where others dwell.

We just happen on, and stay in a campground in FL one night where the entire CG except us were there for some type of music fest. there were small groups playing every where. All night different groups playing diffident music. Very easy to fall asleep with good music all around.
