Greetings and Salutations.

My wife and I are right around the corner in Garland.  It might be fun to get a group together for a weekend campout or two planned for the spring or summer.  Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prarie has both a State Park and a Private park - both of which are very nice.  I've only tent camped at both of them and don't yet know what amenities they might provide for trailer campers.  I don't know any other parks off hand but we'll be taking a look and making a list once we get this TT up to snuff.

The wife and I have camped at lake Benbrook several times, but we have not ventured any closer toward Dallas.  We are still waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer before heading out for the first time this year.  We have been talking about heading towards OK for a weekend, before the summer heat, to check out a campground up there.

We're planning a trip over spring break - March 13th through 21.  There are a couple of very nice campgrounds near Broken Bow, OK on Lake Arrowhead.  The one we'll probably visit again this year is Beavers Bend State Park (link info below).  They have sites with elec/water as well as dry and tent sites.  Lots of trees and a clear stream runs by the campground.

I don't know how crowded the campground will be that week and whether reservations need to be made much ahead.  We just drove in last year and got a site.  This year I'll probably call in a day or two to reserve a spot just to be sure.

All are invited to join us.  Just throwing out ideas.  It might be nice to have a small or large group cookout at least once during the week.  Nothing particularly structured, just fun.

We'll have DW's young niece and nephew with us so we'll be keeping them busy with crafts, hiking and such.  The camp restaurant/giftshop has a small nature museum attached and the rangers lead crafts for kids in the early afternoon.  And there's a couple of pretty easy hiking trails within easy access of the campground.

Hi, I started the Dallas Camping Group several years ago, but it never took off.  Another person took it over, but the site recently closed.

I now camp with my adult kids.  I am going to camp with my daughter and 4 dogs for 3 nites at Loyd Park or Cedar Hill this weekend.  I have never camped in Oklahoma but have been told it is very pretty.

I hope you all continue to converse.  Maybe we could all meet sometime at a campground sometime.

Laura & I are elatively new to pup camping and this forum.  We have camped twice @ Lake Murray SP since April & we love it.  We're going back with kids & grandkids on 7/11 for a week.  We also like Lake Texoma SP in Texas and have camped at Cedar Cove COE park on Lake Lewisville.  We would love to participate in loosley structured meet ups here and there.  Perhaps we could post where we're going and when and then just see who may show up.  We would enjoy meeting some of you nice folks who hang out here.  What do you think?

So many campgrounds, So little time

« Reply #5 on: July 31, 2010, 09:32:42 AM »

Hi to all.  I am looking for a place that I can camp near Greenville, Texas.  I am hoping that I might can make a trip up that way with my two children, around the last week in November.  Any recommendations for that area, or maybe somewhere around Commerce, would be a great help.

Thanks!!

Are you looking for sites with hook-ups?  RV pull-in sites?  Boondocking sites?
How near to Greenville/Commerce?  5, 10, 15, 20 miles?
Do you just want a plain site from which to launch excursions or visit relatives off-site?  Or are you wanting a scenic spot where you can relax?
There are about a dozen parks between Cooper and Greenville that run the gambit from boondocking to full hook-up pad sites.

Last I was up that way it seems there is not much in the way of shade cover.  Mostly rolling hills with tall grasses.  So, be prepared to provide your own shade like one of those pop-up shade thingies.  But be aware of the weather.  I had one of those shade thingies turned into a pretzel just last summer.

When I was tenting I usually had good luck camping in state parks.  Now that I'm RVing it's a bit more work to find an attractive site.  You might Check out Cooper Lake State Park.  They have two sections that might interest you.  Then there are several RV parks that are, well, RV parks.

If you're willing to cross the border into Oklahoma, I understand that Lake Texoma is very nice.  Then there's Beaver Bend State Park on Lake Arrowhead in SE Oklahoma.  We've been there several times and really enjoy the area.  We might try the near-by Houachatown next time.

Good camping

I am looking for tent camping with water and electric.  Will be doing some visiting while we are there.  Not sure where Cooper is - will have to look that up on the map.

Thanks for the information!!

We've done Cedar Hills SP twice. It's a nice park but some of the sites are right on top of each other (relative to other TX SP's). This seems to be one of the bigger parks with regard to number of campsites. We've done it both times to be close to Dallas - we were visiting friends & family & it is so close. The Wal-Mart is 5 minutes from the park, makes it an easy trip.

We did once in the fall with freezing temps (we have electric blankets and a space heater). This past time was a one night stop on the way home - too hot. The heat over Dallas right now is too much.

One complaint - one compliment: The young Ranger was very helpful in suggesting a site. The complaint is that a young couple walked through our site to get to the lake twice. Feel like I should have spoken up, yes a trail to the lake (site 311 if you look at the map) was there as we backed up to the lake - but it wasn't public.

(At least the Arkansas SP has signs by the lack boat docks that those are public)

You can also consider going south.  Lady Bird Johnson Park on the south side of Fredericksburg is nice.  We've camped there many times.  Planning on heading down that way mid October.
