a good source of free oak is old pallets. Check out your local grocery and hardware stores for old pallets that they may be throwing out. Once cut up, they make great fire wood.

Tile stores and home improvement stores are also a great source for pallets. Agreed, they burn great.
Not to get this off topic, but the Emerald Ash Borer is horrible parasite that has decimated thousands of acres of forest. It came to this country from China via pallets. It has spread across the country in pallets and firewood. Therefore, please do not move firewood over long distances. That seems to accelerate the spread of this nasty little critter Case in point - the EAB was not an issue in Pennsylvania 5 years ago. Since then, it has made its way to the Keystone State. Our state parks now ask that you refrain from moving firewood.

We have a mesquite tree in our yard that needs frequent trimming.

There is a little general store about ten miles from the campground we typically go to and get our firewood for the weekend.
They sell seasoned and not so seasoned hickory and ash. I love the smell of the hickory burning!
During our winter camping trips, I mix seasoned and unseasoned wood for our campfires at night.

I like the free kind myself. But do prefer harder wood split. I do not care for the slab wood.

Any hardwood is good for cooking and smoking, don't forget about cherry, pear and peach. All will add flavor to your food plus the colors of the fire are really pretty!

As a frequent user of Ontario Parks we occasionally find ourselves stuck with park-supplied firewood, and it's usually soaking wet. I prefer to take my chances with the folks who are often selling within a few km of the park entrance.

Yikes ! that's terrible.
There was an employee that worked at the last company I worked for who's son was killed by an exploding beer keg.
As the story goes, his son came along at a time when a college frat party was in progress in the woods in their area, and when the keg was empty, someone had the bright idea to place it in the bonfire that was ragging.
Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Favorite campsite wood: Seasoned oak, any variety. Lasts long and makes great coals.
In the Pet Peeves category: wet pine sold at inflated prices in the campground, particularly when it's the only choice.

Favorie and what we can use are two different answers. We are under an Emeral Ash Borer quarentine. Even though it only affects ash all hardwoods are baned from transport. In-state fines are up to $4000.00 and across state fines are Federal offences.
Thus, I only take Cedar and White Pine, as non-dicidious trees are not included in the ban. The EAB is a particularly nasty little bug imported from China.

Last time we were camping, the wood the park sold was junk. So I left the park to find someone selling it. Did not see anyone. I turned down a tree lined country road and there was tons of large dead branches all over the sides of the road. In less then 10 mins I had my pickup full. I even found cut up logs, most were too big to take as I had no way to split them. We had a one of the largest fires in the area all night and it did not cost a cent....

+1 on both points. So when I know this will be a problem - or its going to be a rainy weekend so we'll be under the EZ-up at night - I use something like this:
