Having heard all the stories I decided to test for myself like others here have.
1. If you tighten the friction brake enough your swaybar crushes when the trailer jack knifes.
2. Not quite so tight, fornicating whale sound.
3. Just snug (one rotation of tension) and no problems. No crushing, animal sounds, just safe driving.
Of course it depends on how well aligned the trailer is and weight distribution.
My trailer has a little sway with no sway bar and no sway with the sway bar and "just snug" tension. So backing up is not hard on the sway bar.
All that said, it is best to disconnect it before backing.

Most of the instruction manuals I've seen for friction sway controls state to tighten it all the way down. I would expect that the designer/manufacturer would have seen that in testing and determined that it causes no harm...

Yes. The handle is NOT the tension tightening tool. It is simply the on/ off mechanism. Turn it till it stops every time you put it on. The adjustment is done using the nut under the handle. Usually it comes preset from the factory, and you do not have to turn it at all
