Just curious of any hams out there participated in this year's Field Day while camping. My brother, AA4SD, and I would love to give it a try sometime. I'm wondering if the campground staff and fellow campers would mind having an antenna or two erected for the event.

I was camping out of state during Field Day a few years ago and there was a Ham club spread out over a few sites. The CG Host was a Ham and had set it up.Our local Klub set up Field Day this year in conjunction with a Hot Air Balloon Festival. It was good PR, but I don't think that as many contacts were made due to the distractions of the festival and answering questions for the public. I was busy helping my son's Scout Troop sell food, so I didn't really get on the air this year. If you are going to run a station (or stations) and rigging antennas, you probably should let the CG know what you are up to ahead of time. Good luck.RBB '62DW '62DD&DS '95DS '98DD '99'93 Explorer 4x4 w/Tow'95 F15HD 5.L. 4x4 w/Tow'96 Grand Caravan 3.8L. w/Tow - RIP Sad' Expedition 4x4 5.4L w/Tow'7 Town & Country Touring w/Tow'66 Apache Buffalo' Viking Epic 196

I have noticed a new "rule" showing up at many CGs and that is NOTHING can be tied to a tree. I realize they mean things like tarps, dog, mother in law, etc, but unless you bring a pushup pole or something, you will have to string a dipole in the trees or something. The CG may let you if you ask permission.Mark Indiana Amanda [st-WV]27 Gerweigian Shephound Sadie [st-WV]Still waiting for our children to find us. With a good tuner, maybe you can light up a section of the GC fence with about a kW.  Heh heh heh...

I always bring my my 2m/440 while camping, "just in case".  Sometimes, I bring my HF gear as well.  It doesn't take much to pack a 706GmkII, power supply, and tuner.  When you get there, just rig a quick dipole.  I've never had a campground complain.

I have FM rigs in the vehicles, but are a pain to take in and out (split/head).  I'd like to find a good newer 706  to set up as part of a go kit.  Maybe one day when spare change has a meaning again.

Easiest thing to do is put the rig in the vehicle and mount the antenna there. That way you can work the rig while traveling (6 out of 7 of us are Hams) and then just carry extra coax and move the rig into the camper and run the coax to the TV. Best to run coax out of driver widow so that you don't drive off while connected. My TV (old one) and station are pictured on QRZ. &#

I would love to, but right now I only have an Icom v8000, so 2 meters it is. I plan to start taking it camping with me for weather purposes. I like the 706mkIIg's and would LOVE to get my hands on one of them.

I take a 20 meter dipole and the Hustler on the truck. I am now building a 20m crappie pole vertical.

Between 4 wheeling and camping, I should get my license...

Our club took over a large portion of a campground for field day, and even still doubled up on every pad.

The pavilion was used as one of the operating stations, with our "MCU" as the other - though plenty of folks had their own setups in their tents, campers, and MH.

I do plenty of 4-wheeling as well, and have an HF rig in my Scout, along with the FM equipment.
