As I embark on my new camping hobby, I plan on bringing my acoustic guitar with me. I'm mainly an electric guitarist, but I figure my young daughters would probably like to sing along some campfire songs.

Anyone know any good campfire songbooks with chords?

Google is a friend to us guitar players.  Sites like OLGA (the Online Guitar Archive) are really good.  But beware, these are contributor sites so some people contribute words and chords that aren't quite right.  Easy enough to fix tho!Oh wait.  The site is down.  Apparently a lawyer sent them a letter.  Uh oh.  I wonder if you can see the cached pages via Google or via thewaybackmachine.com

This is something that I've wondered about. I frequently take my guitar with me while camping. Sometimes between songs, I'll hear folks from other campsites say they like it and to play more-- other times just crickets. I worry in those instances that I am bothering other campers. I don't play too late, especially in crowded camping areas. What do you all think?

www.ultimate-guitar.comI am just beginning to learn ... I am learning the tab way, will take lessons once my fingers have stretched enough and I can reach most standard cords! Short stubby little fingers that get in the way.

I typically play like I mean it, and with conviction, which translates into a lot of sound.  But in a campground when I'm just amusing myself I tend to forgo using a pick, or will switch to a softer pick and play lightly, so as not to intrude on anyone else's camping.  I think you just have to be aware of the time of day and what's going on around you, then play accordingly. Lots of people play radios when they camp. I don't see where an acoustic guitar would be any louder or more objectionable. I'm always happy to hear live music, even if it's not my style.

A couple of tab sites that I have found useful are;Cowpie Song Archivehttp://www.roughstock.com/cowpie/songs/911 Tabshttp://www.911tabs.com/Tab Countryhttp://www.tabcountry.com/Gospel Music Archivehttp://www.gospelmusic.org.uk/if you are looking for a book; The Bluegrass Fakebook15 All-Time Favorites by Bert CaseyAbout $15.Lastly, if you get tired of picking and want to watch a wide variety of Americana music try Woodsongshttp://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.aspAs far as playing, I have taken my guitar a time or two. I usually play inside the pup, not outside so as not to disturb others. I have also taken my autoharp and mandolin, and did the same thing, played inside the pup.Maryland Bob & Virginia SUV Green 98 Jeep Cherokee[popblue] 7 Fleetwood Arcadia PopUp Green 4 Fleetwood Niagara (gone but not forgotten) Wink 21 Tacoma M-3 Mandolin[:)] 1996 Washburn D21 Guitar"Bless your hearts... and all your vital organs" - John Duffey

most campfire songs are basic I IV V progressions.  start either in E or G and you have most things covered.

Any big bookstore will usually have a dozen or so thick books of guitar tunes in different styles. 1 Country Songs; 1 Pop Songs, etc. Just go get one with whatever kind of tunes you want.I don't think someone playing an acoustic guitar and singing would be too loud, but then again my instrument is great highland bagpipe, so I might not be bet best person to ask...South Carolina    PopUp Blue Pickup White  '96 Coleman Niagara; '2 Ford Ranger

If you like picking & grinning, you should contact your local bluegrass club/organization and find out when and where  a festival will be near you. They are usually at RV parks and are full of nice and helpful folks.  3 chords is plenty.

+1 on Chordie

They've got almost anything you could want to play and their music prints out really nice with chord charts on the
upper right.

I print them out and put them into a 3-ring binder with clear page sleeves.

On the subject of noise in the campground...I usually bring a guitar, and I do sometimes hear someone's radio. I don't like hearing someone else's music from their radio when I'm camping. So I never use a pick and I play quietly. I have even considered getting an inexpensive nylon string guitar for camping. May do that this year.
